Job Description:
The Design Manager (Label and Packaging) serves as the primary design contact and facilitator for Members of The Napa Valley Reserve working on the custom wine
label program and packaging options.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Responsible for tracking the launch, progress, and communication of the Member label designs (Internal key personnel, Members, designers, illustrators/photographers, printers,
etc.), TTB approvals, TM registrations (legal team), and communicate key steps, approvals, and completion phases details to the Members throughout process.
• Maintain and update the existing Bespoke Label Collection so it remains current, plus update all new Members of the process.
• Email/onboard all new Members of the requirement of custom wine label for the current release in a professional yet directive request.
• Communicate with the approved stable of approved external label designers regarding specifications, allocations /vintages and legal requirements for all custom labels and the
appropriate packaging.
• Oversee the expectations of Members with specific external designers. If art directing for Member’s label, collaborate with designer, oversee and review all initial concepts, and
liaison with Members for final approval / budget.
• Submit all COLA applications to the TTB for approval, as well as internal Reserve review and legal counsel approval if required.
• Work in tandem with Director of Member Wine & Account Management so all labels are in line with Member’s allocation / new purchases and vintages.
• Oversee the revisions, approval, proofing and printing of labels for The Napa Valley Reserve (Red including Kosher, White, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wine and employee
Prado Madera Red, White, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir) including TTB approval, internal, and initial printing specification for all formats. Attend press checks.
• Update existing packaging as needed as well as constantly connect with external vendors for unique, cost effective, and “green” packaging options. Create new packaging
solutions as needed.
• Maintain wooden box inventory and order / replenish boxes / shippers for Member requests accordingly throughout the year in In preparation for holiday gifting.
• Oversee the Holiday Wooden Box Program: confirming email creation and order forms, confirming orders from Members, ordering boxes and customized lids as needed,
tracking orders and confirming deliveries to shipping resource, and prompts to Members for shipping follow-up with shipping resource.
• Print olive oil labels, accordingly, provide labels to labeling crew, and order appropriate glass for current and future olive oil bottlings. Work in tandem with Vineyard Manager.
Maintain inventory and replenish boxes and shippers as necessary.
• Oversee design and production of cave locker plaques working with Fulfillment Coordinator and outside signage firm. Confirm all key steps with Members.
• Oversee any custom bottle etching, from original design, to proofs and approvals, then work accordingly with outside vendor for delivery of shiners, final etching and transfer to
shipping resource.
• Create special event labels, ads, posters, sales collateral, signage as required by Managing Director, Director of Membership, and Communications Director. (Includes Special
Event Labels, Legends of Motorsport poster/invitations, Wine Release Mailer, Harvest Report, and any unique requests.)
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS REQUIRED:
• Professional demeanor and the ability to stay calm under pressure and set example to staff with actions and execution. Good attitude, exceptional attention to detail, and a
willingness to pitch in when necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
• Experience Required: 3 – 4 years of wine industry experience dealing with high-end wine consumers preferred.
• Education, Certification, Licenses, Registrations Required: College degree required.
• Computer Skills / Program Knowledge: Good computer skills required. Working with Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Business Central and Salesforce.
• Communication Skills (verbal/written): Excellent written and verbal communication skills with emphasis on professional, respectful new and friendliness in communication with
Members, vendors, and reporting staff.
• Mathematical Skills: Good math skills.
• Reasoning Ability: Ability to reason well and solve problems both within the position and the reporting staff. Logical and thorough.
• Management Skills. Must be able to hire, terminate and motivate staff as necessary. Must set example to staff in regards to professionalism and set job performance
expectations.
• Physical Requirements: Ability to sit and work at computer for long periods. Must be able to lift 45 pounds.
